first_img 200 Views   no discussions Share LocalNews Dominica has lost a cultural icon and hero – Minister of Culture by: – November 25, 2011 Jeff JosephMinister of Culture, Honorable Justina Charles has described the life of Jeff Joseph, who passed this week as an inspiration to other musicians in Dominica and the region.Jeff Joseph, the lead singer of Grammacks New Generation died at the Le Maynard Hospital in Martinique following surgery for cardiovascular illness.The minister, expressing her sympathies to the family and friends of Jeff Joseph said that the unity which the artist promoted during his performances will always be remembered. “As a musician and cultural icon Jeff Joseph has inspired many people and musicians here in Dominica and even in our neighbouring French islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. His contribution to the development of creole music and cadence-lypso is particularly phenomenal. His talent, dedication and perseverance have yielded legendary hit songs over the period of three decades. Jeff Joseph we know dedicated his whole life to music; through his music he promoted love, togetherness and Caribbean unity while holding firm to his Dominican roots and culture”. Jeff Joseph recently performed at the 15th Annual World Creole Muosic Festival just a few weeks ago. His performance has since been described as energetic, and to patrons never seemed to be his last.Honorable Charles is expressing her sympathies to the community ofSt Joseph, where Jeff Joseph hailed from.” At this point I really wish to convey my heartfelt sympathies and those of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports to the family of Jeff Joe and to the people of St. Joseph on this sad occasion”. The Minister said that Dominica has lost ‘a cultural icon’ and ‘Jeff Joe’ as he was commonly known will be remembered by generations to come.“My heart also goes out to his many friends and fellow musicians. For us we know we have lost a patriotic son, a cultural icon and a hero and we know we’ll definitely miss him. At this point we can only pray that his soul continues to rest in perfect peace”.
