first_imgThe 2020 MLB season is right around the corner, It’s been approximately 58 years since the offseason, an offseason that was tremendously entertaining for a multitude of reasons. Free-agent signings, big trades and sign-stealing revelations all led to immense amounts of suspense for the 2020 season, which did, in fact, last longer than anyone really wanted. — The Blue Jays really needed help in the rotation, and Hyun-Jin Ryu will help with that. Ryu, 33, finished second in NL Cy Young race in 2019. Worth watching to see how that will translate to the AL East.— A pair of surprising signings in Cincinnati: Mike Moustakas and Nick Castellanos are going to help a bottom-of-the-barrel Reds offense rebound. Couple that with a pitching staff that was already very good, and the NL Central race could be very intriguing in 2020. — Hey, remember how average-to-bad the Braves bullpen has been in recent years? They actually took steps to alleviate it this offseason, signing lefty reliever Will Smith to a big deal. That could go a long way for Atlanta this year. MORE: Nine questions for the 2020 MLB seasonThe first part of that offseason equation led to lots of intriguing teams to watch in 2020. The White Sox, Reds, Angels, Phillies, Twins and Yankees all made really intriguing moves to bolster their rosters and vie for playoff position this season.Well, with Opening Day officially official for July 23, let’s take a look at which big free-agent signings could help the most in a 60-game season:Zack Wheeler, PhilliesFormer team: Mets2019 stats: 31 starts (195 1/3 innings), 3.96 ERA, 4.07 xFIP, 8.98 K/9, 4.7 fWARThere’s some question of projection as to who Zack Wheeler is going to be, but his stuff makes that projection a little bit easier. After an injury-riddled first few years of his career, Wheeler settled into being a solid piece of the Mets’ rotation, worth 4.2 fWAR in 4.7 fWAR in 2018 and 2019, respectively. With Jake Arrieta declining over his past three seasons, the Phillies needed another option to help bolster Aaron Nola, who had an up-and-down 2019 season. Wheeler offers lots of help at the top of the rotation, and his familiarity with the NL East is going to help in a reduced schedule.Anthony Rendon, AngelsFormer team: Nationals2019 stats: .319/.412/.598, 34 HRs, 154 wRC+, 7.0 fWARThe Angels desperately needed Gerrit Cole on their pitching staff, arguably more than the Yankees did. But signing a premier bat isn’t a bad fallback option.Rendon played to an MVP level during the regular season and then came up huge for the world champion Nationals in the postseason, hitting .328 with three home runs in Washington’s miraculous run to a ring. That lasting image and memory of Rendon is a worthwhile one for Washington, who let him take his talents to the West Coast, pairing with Mike Trout in Los Angeles. While he’s dealing with a balky oblique, when Rendon makes his debut, it’s hard to see him not having an immediate impact on an offense that wasn’t really great in 2019.In a short year, a lineup of consisting of Rendon, Trout, Justin Upton and Andrelton Simmons will play. I feel sorry for the baseballs.Gerrit Cole, YankeesFormer team: Astros2019 stats: 33 starts (212 1/3 innings), 2.50 ERA, 2.48 xFIP, 13.82 K/9, 7.4 fWARSurprise, surprise, right?Gerrit Cole is arguably the best free-agent pitcher to hit the open market, like, ever. A combination of his age, talent and production made it a no-brainer for the Yankees to dig deep into the checkbook and part with $324 million to secure his services. Yankees GM Brian Cashman referred to Cole as his “white whale.” The courtship history is well documented: The Yankees scouted Cole and drafted him, but Cole opted for UCLA; the Yankees made efforts to trade for Cole while he was a member of the Pirates; Cole, the life-long Yankees fan, brought a childhood sign to his intro press conference. But aside from the romantic baseball stuff, the fit couldn’t be better: The Yankees have searched for an ace since the early years of CC Sabathia’s stay with New York. While Luis Severino certainly showed flashes, between inconsistency and injury history, his standing as a true ace is in question. Now, with Severino out for the year, the fit for Cole makes even more sense. If all goes well in 2020, a short season gives Cole and the Yankees a massive advantage that they haven’t had in years past: pretty much a guaranteed win once every five days.Dallas Keuchel, White SoxFormer team: Braves2019 stats: 18 starts (112 2/3 innings), 3.75 ERA, 4.06 xFIP, 7.27 K/9, 0.8 fWARThe White Sox are a big-time team to watch in 2020. We’ve heard about their talent for years, and it’s time for the rubber to meet the road. Or Dallas Keuchel to meet the rubber. Or something.Keuchel provides almost a polar opposite of what Lucas Giolito does, making for a very intriguing 1-2 pitching punch in 2020. Should Keuchel revert to average to above-average form, he could offer a massive boost to their rotation. Will Keuchel help shift the balance of the AL Central in Chicago’s favor? Probably not. But pairing him with free-agent signing Yasmani Grandal, one of baseball’s best pitch framers, is sure to make for some frustrated batters and help the Sox as they continue to evolve and develop.Worth mentioning…— The Twins hit 307 home runs last year. Their signing of Josh Donaldson will make sure they keep destroying the baseball in 2020. They could have used more starting pitching, but Donaldson (4.9 fWAR in 2019) isn’t a bad fallback.— Madison Bumgarner shocked the world when he signed with the Diamondbacks on a pretty big deal. The 30-year-old Bumgarner is going to head up a rotation that was quietly very competitive in 2019.last_img read more

first_imgDespite the presence of 22 pieces of road building equipment in Nimba County, most of the major farm-to- market roads, including the Bahn-Buutuo Highway, are impassable this raining season.During a tour of the Buu–Yao Administrative District over the weekend, Daily Observer Nimba County correspondent said he saw several vehicles stranded along the road as a result of heavy mud that the recent downpour of rain produced. The deplorable condition of the road, accordingly to journalist Menkor, began from the center of Bahn City to Buutuo which is situated at the Liberian/Ivorian border further in the northeast.“The Bahn-Buutuo road is so bad that we were unable to reach our destination during the July 26 celebration,” said Dr. Kardiker Rex Dahn, Deputy Director-General, National Commission on Higher Education.Dr. Dahn said he had intended to spend the festive season with some family members in Buutuo as well as idenitify with the on-going weeklong conference of the Liberian Inland Church, but could not do so due to the bad road condition.“As we speak, no car is able to reach Buutuo and motorcycles are also finding it very hard,” he added. Some of the roads that have been closed to vehicle movement include the Yao-Lepula/Buutuo Highway via Nyor-Gomaplay—the birth place of Senator Prince Johnson and the district Rep. Samuel Korgar.Other no go areas are the link between Wea-Beadatuo and Glarlay New Town as well as the Wea-Beaplay to Yao-Nyanlay via Yao Mahnplat.Nimba County has three sets of yellow machines for the rehabilitation of feeder roads across the county. The county was divided into three regions with each carrying a set of machines, which include a caterpillar, road grader, front-end loader, compactor, 2 excavators and a dump truck.County authorities recently announced some achievements in the rehabilitation of feeder roads in some quarters of the county, including the Buu–Yao.Recently, county authorities procured three double-cabin pickups from the County Social Development Fund for use by the Superintendent, Development Superintendent and the County Inspector.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
